According to several International travel magazines, Kerala a tiny state in the southern part of India is one of the richest and most beautiful state in India. It is nicknamed as “GOD’s OWN COUNTRY. Cochin is the business capital of Kerala.
New Cochin is termed as Ernakulam, which is an active center for trade and business.
This was the area where the first European settlers arrived. It began in 1502 AD with the arrival of the Portuguese followed by the Dutch in 1663 AD. The British came later in 1795, setting up colonies, leading to colonization. They ruled for almost four hundred and fifty years, before they were ousted and India got her Independence in 1947.
Even today we can find many European bungalows here dating back to several hundred years. Today most of them have been converted to luxurious hotels. It was the natural disaster, a big flood that happened in 1341 AD which gave us the Cochin port. Ironically, it was at this time that the Chinese with their fishing nets (Chinese Fish Nets) and vessels came and settled here.
Just two kilometers to the East of Fort Cochin lies Mattanchery. Here we can find a Jewish synagogue 1568 AD still in good condition. It is over 450 years old. Besides this we can also see a small palace called the “Dutch Palace”, built by the Portuguese in 1555 AD.

Me being a native of this place, I will take the privilege to show you around, and visit some of the famous historical places. (Almost 15 of them). Amongst them are three Jewish synagogues, claiming to be four hundred of years old.
Muziris was the natural port on the West Coast of India, before the great flood of 1341 CE, destroyed it. It was more than 3000 years old and welcomed the first Jews in 961 BC, the Christians in 52 AD and Islam in 629 AD respectively.
